Whether you call it downtempo, triphop, ambient groove, ambient techno, intelligent dance music — the best of this music is a great mix of many flavors. It’s all just good groove. And best of all, it’s all music by independent artists, who are making this amazing music because they love it, not because they expect to make a skillion dollars off selling a twenty-dollar CD with two good songs on it.
This means that all the tracks are in rotation with explicit permission of the artist, label, or a designated representative. This arrangement does not involve any dodgy ‘performance licensing fees,’ or any other such foolish notions which might involve my having to pay for the privilege of helping people promote their music. Some years from now, after the recording industry finishes its slow-mo implosion routine, this is how all music distribution will work. Until then, I guess we can all just enjoy the groove here while the rest of the world catches up.
With EpiphanyRadio, I’ve tried to find the coolest, smoothest, most interesting grooves I can, to create a specific atmosphere. I’m trying to err on the side of having a smaller number of really good tracks, so you’re not going to hear a lot of filler here. My goal isn’t simply to throw in as many downtempo songs as possible. Each tune has to go with the overarching vibe. I don’t think I can articulate that vibe in words quite yet, but I know it when I hear it.
There have always been a few tracks in rotation here which challenge your ear a bit, or push the boundries one direction or another. And since our transition to a 100% RIAA-free format, this is even more true. The independents just seem to be a bit more creative — likely because they’re not single-mindedly focused on selling their music to a lowest-common-denominator audience. In any case, I try not to go too terribly far afield, but sometimes it’s good to get off the beaten track.
